My current project I Wanted to be an Artist has been inspired by drawings and painting I did when I was 5 or 6 years old. I am in the process of taking these drawings and paintings and transforming them into three large scale tapestries that will hang on the outside of Imperial Theatre in Saint John NB, in September 2009. The tapestries will each be 5 feet wide by 30 feet long. They will remain on the east side of the building for the month. A special thanks to artsnb for making this project possible. Keep checking in for more information about the unveiling of the work next fall, and for updates on the project as it progresses.

 So Far So Good

Much of my work is based on self-reflection and emotion; repetition and layering. Sometimes, I work abstractly without a pattern or cartoon. Other times I focus on very descriptive images. In this instance, I attempted to produce compositions that glimpse how I felt over a series of eight days.

This body of work is an exploration of three mediums: drawing, textile work, and photography.  The process started with one self portrait drawn each day for eight days. Since the portraits were done as blind contours, the images end up looking askew, and somewhat monstrous. Yet curiously, there were still recognizable elements of me. These portraits quickly developed into collages with photographic elements and other found items. The addition of photographic parts was an attempt to bring the drawings a little closer to reality. After the collages were complete, I felt very much like they were an exercise. The exploration was not complete. From there, I decided re-create the collages as tapestries. It was a challenge to create a likeness in a different medium and process.  The first being very fluid, expressive, and quick, while the second was rigid, time consuming, and unforgiving. The third element of photographic collages came about after I started playing with the photographs I had cut up in the process of creating the collages. I was interested in how distorted even true likenesses can become when you start cutting and pasting them together. In the end, all of these pieces are self portraits conveying both the beauty and the ugliness inseparable from one’s psyche and self-image.

  This is My Heart-detail

This is My Heart- Mercerized  embroidery cotton on linen. Stitches: cross, couching, straight, satin, tent, split, back. This piece also contains ink transfers, heat transfers, & small found objects. It's amazing how much a piece can change in the act of making it. It is as if the piece tells you what direction to take it. It was completed late September, 2007 after months and months of stitching, in the midst of packing and moving.
